Happy New Year!

January 2019

By

Carl Clark

The calendar says we have just entered a new year, but for Ardmore Little Theatre half of our performance season and operational year has already passed. Our year began July 1, 2018 and ends on June 30, 2019.

Our next new year starts July 1, 2019 and ends June 30, 2020. What a year it will be!

Elsewhere in this newsletter, you'll find an article about important anniversaries which both the Goddard Center and Ardmore Little Theatre will be celebrating in 2019-20. Beyond that, we expect 2019-20 will bring real change in ALT operations, giving greater opportunities for performers to take part in more and varied productions.

Our current lease with Goddard Center (expiring this June 30) limits ALT to five plays within our 'year' unless we pay a substantial amount of extra rent for a sixth show -- which we typically do – in order to stage our children's summer musical.

Negotiations for a new lease agreement are underway and Goddard has agreed in principle to remove limitations on the number of productions, basing our annual rental fee on the number of days that ALT utilizes the stage and dance studio.

That change would give ALT greater operational flexibility, enabling us to be developing other productions – perhaps a dinner theatre show and a one-act play or a musical revue -- at the same time one of our six major productions is in rehearsal. Accomplishing this will require complex scheduling. However, the change will indeed offer greater opportunity for performers, tech people, directors, etc. to use their talents and skills while enabling ALT to get more productions on stage with a variety of performing arts activities which could appeal to broader audiences. Our educational efforts must also be stepped up to provide manpower needed for the increased number of productions.

We're excited about these possibilities, and the ALT Board of Directors continues to discuss ways we can expand performance opportunities and broaden audience appeal. We hope you share our excitement for enhanced operations, and we also hope you can be more deeply involved as we move forward with these programs in the near future. We're thinking outside the box and looking to break out of it.

Wish us luck in satisfactorily completing the lease negotiations and getting ready for our exciting new year.
